day-to-day pregnancy

It's been a while because life is so hectic. I spent a week in Texas/Louisiana and have been playing catch-up. It is amazing how much difference a week makes in the life of a little baby. Kate seemed huge when I came home; it was a wonderful feeling to hold her again and see her smile (with 4 whole teeth!). Her nanny, Teresa, has been taking care of her 4 days a week now, sometimes with a baby boy named Evan who is just 3 months older than Kate. We decided it would be a positive thing for her to have a playmate (and hopefully someone to imitate - Evan is walking!).

Kate had her 9-month doctor's appointment yesterday. No shots this time but they had to draw blood (thank goodness Daddy was there to comfort her!). She is in the 98 percentile for height at 29 1/2 inches, but the scale only showed 19lbs, which seemed VERY light. Overall she is in excellent health (if not excellent mood).

Yesterday we took Kate to the zoo. The first time we took her, many months ago, she slept the entire time, but yesterday was more fun. She wasn't terribly interested in the animals, but really enjoyed watching other kids. Because it was hot and sunny, I made sure she wore a hat - which she hated. Here's a photo of us getting ready.

Back from New Orleans, and Kate greets me crawling... backwards! She seems to be part crab. She is also trying really hard to stand up and if we hold her upright she will bear weight on her legs for almost a minute. She was 9 months yesterday!

This is Kate's journal, a place for us to share things about her development that will make her smile and blush later on. But it is also a place for me to express feelings and share experiences of motherhood, and this new one is worth sharing. I am making my way down to Louisiana tomorrow to join the relief efforts of hurricane Katrina. David was strongly opposed to my going, but the images on TV of dehydrating babies and desperate parents got to him as well. So I am leaving to Baton Rouge, and might have snatched up the last rental car in Louisiana. I hope I can do some good, and make Kate proud.

We bought Kate a couple of Baby Einstein movies and, to our surprise, she is absolutely hooked! She can sit there for an hour and barly blink. Even Zelda can't get her attention. Anticipating more quiet afternoons, I went on Ebay and got us the entire collection of 18 DVDs.
